Electrical and Lighting Repair Services

Electrical problems can cause any number of malfunctions in any of your car’s systems, from windows that won’t roll up to the engine cutting out when you turn on the radio. Sometimes it can be difficult and confusing trying to find the root cause of the problems you are experiencing. When it comes to electrical issues, symptoms are rarely common; but in most cases the causes are. Electrical shorts can cause your battery to drain even when nothing is turned on, ruin electrical components, and sometimes even start a fire. Grounding issues can cause components to not work or work incorrectly. Many systems are tied together and a malfunctioning component can sometimes affect systems that may seem unrelated. We have the knowledge and equipment to fix most any electrical related issue. We can also install after-market equipment such as stereos and backup cameras.

Services Offered

  • Electrical System Diagnosis and RepairWhen you have an electrical issue, we can isolate and identify the problem with our diagnostic equipment and factory service manuals specific to your vehicle. No problem is too big or too small for us to solve. We’ve even fixed problems caused by other “mechanics” that didn’t know what they were doing.
  • Headlight Repair and ReplacementYou need to see at night as well as be seen. Did you know that driving with the driver’s (but not passenger) side headlight out is a no-warning ticketable offense in Georgia? Most headlights are simple to install, but some cars require the removal of the entire headlight just to change the bulb. If both of your headlights are out or only shine on certain settings, you may need a relay or headlight switch replaced to get your lights working.
  • Brake Light Repair and ReplacementLighting issues can be a serious safety hazard. If other drivers can’t see you slow or stop, prepare to make turn, or just plain can’t see you… a wreck is likely to happen. Most times it’s just a blown bulb, which you might be able to replace yourself. (Bulbs in the rear are usually easily accessible.) But if it’s more than a blown bulb or you don’t know how to replace it, we can find and fix the problem. In the case of brake lights, this usually involves replacing the brake light switch. Tail lights usually require the headlight switch to be replaced when the bulbs are good.
  • Turn Signal Repair and ReplacementAs with any light, the bulb is always the first thing to check. With turn signals, usually if the bulbs are good, the flasher module or the switch is at fault.
A lot of people in the Atlanta area neglect to use their turn signals, but signalling turns and lane changes makes traffic flow safer and more consistent since people can see your intentions. Please use your turn signals so everyone stays safe.
  • Dash/Interior Lights Repair and ReplacementMost interior lighting is made to be easily accessible, so the owner can switch out the bulbs when they blow. The dash lights are not so easy and require the removal of half the dashboard on most cars. Sometimes the problem is not the bulbs, but its the dimmer switch, door switches, or printed circuits.
  • Battery Diagnosis and ReplacementBatteries have multiple lead cells in them that get warm when the battery is in use. When you overload a battery, these cells may warm to a point that they break the casing around them. This is called a dead cell because the broken casing keeps that cell from making any power. We’ve seen many customers with batteries too small for the vehicles they are installed in. This will shorten the life of the battery by years by causing dead cells.
  • Alternator Diagnosis and ReplacementAlthough it is rare for an alternator to fail completely, this is often the case when your car dies on the road (not due to mechanical issues) and is immediately unable to engage the starter. This happens because a completely dead alternator is not charging the battery while the engine is running. Your engine will continue to run until the battery is dead and you are then unable to start due to the drained battery. When the car notices the alternator is not putting out enough voltage, it will turn on the red battery light. This light should be checked immediately. Continuing to use a bad alternator will eventually leave you stranded and needing a jump start.
  • Starter Repair and ReplacementUsually when your starter doesn’t work, the starter itself is the problem. Other times it can be the result of a defective relay, an under-charging alternator, a bad battery, or loose wiring (especially a major engine ground or the starter’s power wire). In the case of loose wiring, check that the battery terminals are tight (Try to shake them by hand. If they move on the post, they need to be tightened.) and then follow the large wires off each post to where they are bolted in and check them as you did the battery terminals. A defective relay can usually be swapped with an identical relay for a different system to be sure that’s the problem.
  • Full or Partial Re-WiringThough we hope you never need it, we can completely or partially replace wire harnesses and fuse boxes that have been damaged by a collision, fire, or incompetent “mechanics”. We’ve repaired several cars like this for the body shop next door, so feel free to swing by and ask them about our work. And if you need collision repair also, there are 2 body shops at our location that do good work, so you can get everything done without having to pay for a second towing.
  • After-market Radio InstallMany people are wanting the modern conveniences of newer cars (like backup cameras and hands-free bluetooth calling) in their older cars. No matter what type of accessory you want to add to your car, we can install it neatly and correctly. On our aftermarket installs, you won’t find wires jammed into fuse slots or hanging out for all to see. And for accessories that use a lot of power (video systems, stereo amplifiers, power inverters) you may need a more powerful alternator installed also, which we can test for once the new accessory is installed. You don’t want to be that guy that needs a jump every time he turns the radio up. Not only would that be a huge embarrassment, but over-draining your battery will cause it to fail prematurely.
  • Amplifier and Sub-woofer InstallMany people are wanting the modern conveniences of newer cars (like backup cameras and hands-free bluetooth calling) in their older cars. No matter what type of accessory you want to add to your car, we can install it neatly and correctly. On our aftermarket installs, you won’t find wires jammed into fuse slots or hanging out for all to see. • Accessory Driving Lights and Fog Lights Repair and InstallSeeing where you’re going and what’s in the road ahead at night is probably the most important part of night driving. If you need extra lighting at night, we can install accessory driving lights. When many people think of driving lights, they say “fog lights”. While driving lights and fog lights are installed exactly the same way; fog lights are less focused, much more intense, and may blind other drivers when used on a clear night; while driving lights are very focused and only shine where they are aimed. If you want fog lights instead of driving lights, we install them as well, but keep in mind they are only for low visibility conditions.
  • Backup Camera InstallMany people are wanting the modern conveniences of newer cars (like backup cameras and hands-free bluetooth calling) in their older cars. No matter what type of accessory you want to add to your car, we can install it neatly and correctly. On our aftermarket installs, you won’t find wires jammed into fuse slots or hanging out for all to see. • OBD2 Connector RepairIf you can’t get any code scanners to read your engine computer or the emissions shop said they can’t check your emissions data, you may have a problem with your OBD2 data link connector. Many customers believe this is a problem with the engine computer itself, which is an expensive part on most vehicles. Usually it is not the computer at fault, but a problem with the wiring to the OBD2 connector. In fact, the most common cause is a blown fuse.
  • Hunt Down “Electrical Demons”If you’ve ever had an unexplainable electrical issue, you might think your car is possessed. That’s why these issues are commonly referred to as demons, gremlins, and ghosts. Every problem is different, but frayed or loose wiring is usually the cause of these types of issues. Other times it could be internal circuitry inside of a control module. Whatever the problem, we can trace down and exorcise the electrical demon that’s been haunting your car.
  • Power Seat Repair and ReplacementPowered accessories like windows, doors, mirrors, and seats make life a bit easier. When they fail, they can become annoying and sometimes pose a safety hazard. Usually when these types of accessories fail, the electric motor is to blame. Most other times it’s the switch or control module. Rarely is the problem due to wiring or mechanical problems. Whatever the cause, we can isolate the problem so we replace only what’s damaged.
  • Power Window Repair and ReplacementPowered accessories like windows, doors, mirrors, and seats make life a bit easier. When they fail, they can become annoying and sometimes pose a safety hazard. Usually when these types of accessories fail, the electric motor is to blame. Most other times it’s the switch or control module. Rarely is the problem due to wiring or mechanical problems. • Power Assisted Brake Booster ReplacementNewer cars are trying new designs of power brake systems. Most popular is the fluid boosted design, but there were also a few that used an electric booster. These were only used in a few high-end Toyota-made cars, but the design was abandoned because it was too prone to failure (average of 50,000 miles between failures) and very expensive to repair ($5,000+ at the dealer). We can save you money by installing the booster assembly, but it requires a Toyota diagnostic computer to correctly program it afterwards.
  • Electrical Ground RepairA bad ground can cause its connected systems to malfunction. A main ground can even keep the car from being able to start. Typically a bad ground is due to loose or broke wiring, but may also be due to rust or corrosion.

A warning about electrical fires

Electrical fires do not happen often, but when they do happen they can be very dangerous since the materials in most cars burn quickly. If you turn on something electrical and then see or smell smoke, turn it off immediately and watch to make sure it has stopped. If possible, pull the fuse for the defective component. If the smoke continues, pull the battery cable off of one of the posts and go get a fire extinguisher with a “C” rating (ABC and BC are most common). Always spray at the source of the fire, not at the smoke. If the component stopped smoking after it was turned off, grab a fire extinguisher (just in case), and bring it to us to fix. — Although it’s not a legal requirement to carry a BC fire extinguisher in your car at all times, as it is in most European countries, it is a smart idea. It might be a 1-in-a-million occurrence, but today could be your unlucky day.

Always check your fuses first.

When ever something electrical stops working, the first thing you should check is the fuse. If the fuse is blown, you may have a problem. Replace the fuse with another of the same type and amperage rating (the number on top). If it blows again, do not replace it a second time. A fuse that blows repeatedly has a problem in the circuit that needs to be fixed. Continuing to replace the fuse (or using the wrong amperage rating fuse) could damage the component it’s meant to protect or even start a fire.

Can’t Pass Emissions Due to Unreadable Computer?

Recently we’ve had several customers come in who have been unable to pass emissions with 1996 and newer vehicles because the emissions station was unable to read their engine computer. Many customers believe this is a problem with the engine computer itself, which is an expensive part on most vehicles. Usually it is not the computer at fault, but a problem with the wiring to the OBD2 connector that the emissions stations must connect to in order to read the computer. In fact, the most common cause is a blown fuse. If you have this problem, bring your car to us and we will have you ready to go quickly and usually in less than an hour.
